Plus Size Nursing
Bras
It can be difficult enough to find just the right bra when you are
a plus size woman, but when you’re looking for a nursing bra it can get even more complicated. Some companies
simply consider plus size nursing bras to be large versions of more average size nursing bras, but this is
usually the wrong way to think. When it comes to bras to wear during pregnancy and while you are
breastfeeding, plus size women have some specific needs when it comes to comfort and
reliability.
If you are considering what to look for in plus size nursing bras,
the first thing that you want to do is think about what you look for in regular plus size bras. Larger women
tend to need more support on the side, and in nursing bras this is even more important. You can buy a nursing
bra that is a 38 DD and it may fit fine in the cups and around under the breasts, but if the sides are too
narrow it can look bad and feel too pinching. Women have specific needs when it comes to nursing bras, and
plus size women have even more specific needs.
Larger women tend to have larger breasts even when they’re not
pregnant or nursing, which means that heaviness of the breasts is an important consideration when shopping
for plus size nursing bras. Gravity can hurt when it comes to large breasts that are tender because of
pregnancy or new motherhood, so support is crucial. For this reason plus size women can often benefit from
extra support on the bottom of their nursing bra cups. This extra support can help to lift the breast enough
to ease that feeling of heaviness and pulling.
A large woman should not have to be embarrassed to shop for plus
size nursing bras, though many times she feels this way when she goes to regular department stores. It isn’t
that the salespeople are rude; it’s just that many of them don’t understand the plus size woman’s needs when
it comes to a comfortable nursing bra. For this reason, it’s often better to shop at a maternity store, where
the salespeople are more informed. If a plus size women’s store carries nursing bras, this can be a good
place to shop as well.
Certain brands can be better when shopping for plus size nursing
bras as well. Some of the brands that are singled out as being good ones for larger women to look when
shopping for nursing bras are Leading Lady, Anita and Extra Extra Support. These brands take plus size women
into consideration when designing many of their nursing bras. When shopping for plus size nursing bras, many
larger women find that they end up paying more than their thinner counterparts. Most of the time the
company’s explain this by saying that they have to make specialty nursing bras for larger women, or that they
simply have to use more material. Good nursing bras usually run anywhere from $20 to $70, and if you’re a
larger woman you may have to look harder to stay within this range, but it is
possible.
